Committed to species and nature conservation
We always strive to ensure that the management of our fish farms is as sustainable as possible. In addition to our gentle farming activities and the integration of our fish farming into the local ecosystem, processing and preparation also play an important role in this approach. By processing our fish directly at our facilities, we not only avoid subjecting the animals to unnecessary stress and distress but are also able to guarantee our customers fresh fish at all times. Just like back when our company was first founded, the subsequent preparation of our fish is still completed by hand in the present day and adapted to suit our current order situation. This enables us to ensure that virtually no animal foodstuffs go to waste. Despite our focus on sustainability, we are indeed aware that our efforts are not yet exhaustive and there is still further room for improvement. We believe that it is our responsibility to utilise this potential to an even larger extent in the future.
Resource-saving production
Trout farming involves a wide variety of general sustainability aspects. Trout boast extremely impressive feed conversion and are able to transform food into body mass at a ratio of approximately 1:1. Thanks to this remarkable feed efficiency, trout farming is a more resource-friendly and sustainable form of producing animal proteins than other animal breeding activities. The high fillet yield obtained from the trout additionally ensures efficient use of the fish as a resource.
Fish farming also offers several other positive properties with regard to the conservation of resources. The global warming potential of trout farming, for example, is much lower than that of meat production. What’s more, the production and consumption of fish from aquaculture rather than fish caught in the wild helps to preserve the fish population in the oceans. The treatment and return of the water required for our breeding activities ensure that this resource is also used responsibly.
Sustainable projects: our commitments
Within the scope of the North Rhine-Westphalia River Rur Fish Migration Programme (NRW-Wanderfischprogramm an der Rur), we support our local fishing association in its work on hatching and reproducing indigenous brown trout from the Wehebach strain and returning salmon to the river. The programme aims to effectively encourage a population of native trout and salmon in the local waters. We also breed approx. 50,000 salmon eggs in our hatchery every year as a part of this trusting cooperation.
